In my Outlook 2003 (Windows XP Home SP3,) the backup tool is programmed to
conduct one daily back up of my Personal Folders file (Outlook Backup.pst)
and my Archives Folders file (Archive Backup.pst). However, when I close
Outlook for the day and the backup window pops up, it is only the Archives
Folders that gets backed up. The Personal Folders don't even get mentioned in
the window.

I have reinstalled the backup tool several times. I have add-ins (Skylook
and Outlook Connector,) but these have been installed forever have never
interfered with the back up process. Which has recently started to fail as
described, without any recent hardware/software alterations in the system
that I can think of.

Are you saying you don't install Windows Updates, Office Updates, antivirus
updates, etc.?

You don't really need a backup tool for Outlook. You can simply follow the
very easy instructions located here:

http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm

As long as you ensure Outlook is closed, you can't go wrong.

Of course I download Microsoft Updates, automatically, all the time. I don't
understand what that has to do with the Outlook backup tool not working
properly.

I do need the backup tool, daily, because there is important professional
email information that I want to have absolutely updated and backed up on a
daily basis. And it is very convenient to perform that backup automatically
after closing down Outlook for the day... If the backup tool were working
properly.

Outlook is closing down completely, and yet the backup tool is not backing
up what it should. So, yes, you can go wrong, dead wrong, even with Outlook
closed.
