I have:
Windows XP SP2 with the welcome screen enable.
a couple of users with no password (I need it this way)
set autologon using "control userpasswords2"
set the ForceAutologon registry entry.
The computer is in Workgroup
I have applied all the latest patches (High priority and Optional)

If I turn the computer on and press the shift key the computer logs on
automatically ignoring the shift key.

If I make a logoff while pressing the shift key it allows me to select the
login user.

I have tried without the ForceAutologon registry entry but the problem
remains.

I have had the problem on computer installed from scratch.

I need to be able to use the shift key when I start the computer the first
time.

Thanks
Giuseppe

Hi Giuseppe,

You'll need to press and hold the SHIFT key just before the Welcome screen loads. The timing is important.

Manually, this can be done by altering the "IgnoreShiftOverride" registry value. To disable the meaning of the SHIFT key, set the IgnoreShiftOverride key value to one.

Disable the Auto Logon Shift Override Feature:

MSGina.dll Features (Windows):

Seems that LogonExpert for 'Windows Autologon'
(http://www.logonexpert.com) tool does this

From http://www.logonexpert.com/learnmore.html

"Ease of autologon interruption
If your plans change and you do not want to logon automatically, you
can easily interrupt automatic logon: just press a "Shift" key and
automatic logon will be canceled. If you prefer not to allow users to
interrupt automatic logon, you can disable this option."
