I have a dell machine configured with a static ip address, but when I first
boot up I have no internet connection. If I look at the status of my
connection I will see an address assigned by autoconfiguration and my own
static address. If I do a reset the autoconfig will go away, and everthing
will work. How do I disable the ipv4 autoconfiguration?

to disable the DHCP, right click on the network icon on the taskbar, select
STATUS. on the windows go on properties. select "Internet protocol(TCP/IP)
and click on properties again.
disable the firt option and Put your own IP ADRESS now, The mask is
255.255.255.0 the autoconfig is disabled

Ip address is already set to static, but I get an autoconfigure address as
well, it appears that I am not getting a response from my switch to comply
with microsoft vista so it automatically assigns me one. I have edited the
registry and disabled the autoconfigure but my network still comes up with
local only, I then have to reinitilize the network card to get to the
internet. I have also taken one of these machines home (I have 9 with same
problem) and it has worked fine in either dhcp or static mode. This once
again makes me think of a possible switch issue. I have hp procurve powered
switchs, have downloaded the latest firmware. Talked to support from hp, dell
and microsoft, and no one has a clue. I will most likely be changing back to
xp as it works fine.
