Autocomplete / user name / password problems

Hi all.

Since a day or two my XP Pro SP3 / IE 7 (7.0.5730) installation is acting
up. All of my user name / password combinations seem to have disappeared.

Worse, whenever XP asks me to save the password I click "yes"; but the next
time I have to retype the whole thing. Also, the same happens with Live
Messenger.

I've done some searching here and found the comments about deleting the
protected storage key. Doesn't help. I've restarted the PC several times
since it first happened. No joy. And just now I reinstalled IE 7. Same
problem...

If you know what's going on and how to fix it I'd appreciate your help!

Thanks,

Erik

Hi Erik,

Since installed SP3 or......

Restore IE AutoComplete Password Prompt (Line 13) Right hand side
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

AutoComplete Mode Enabled or Disabled (Line 37)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Close IE. Then go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc
Scroll down to Protected Storage. Note the Status column. If Protected
Storage is running, Started will appear under Status.

If Protected Storage is not started, start it. To do this, right-click
Protected Storage, and then click Start. If Protected Storage is started,
stop and then restart it.

If you receive a Stop Other Services message, record the names of the other
services that will be stopped, and then click Yes. Then restart the others
services. Close out then reopen IE.

AutoComplete Does Not Save Username and Password

For Pro: Start/Administrative Tools/Services/Protected Storage. Make sure
the Service Protected Storage is Started.

Addresses Are Not Resolved When the AutoComplete Feature Is Enabled

Hi Kelly.

Thanks for your fast reply. My comments inserted below.

I ran the VBS program/script and inserted the registry info. No change.

Protected Storage service was running; but I stopped and restarted it
anyway. No change.

This is where it got "interesting". Methods 1 and 2 didn't help.

Method 3 explains how to Register RSABase.dll (and unregister). I followed
the instructions, but I get an error: "LoadLibrary("RSABase.dll") failed -
The specified module could not be found" on both unregister and register
commands.

So I ran the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) but I didn't get any
messages, and didn't have to restart my PC. Not sure what to think of that...

Method 4 describes how to create a new user account. Restarted PC, but got
logged in with my default account again. I forgot I have TweakUI installed,
that logs me in automatically. When I went to change the Logon options I
noticed that "Logon automatically as ..." is not even checked anymore. I
uninstalled TweakUI, but with every restart I keep going to the same account.
In other words: although I have 3 accounts now I can only log on to one.
Total weirdness.

I'm not 100 percent sure; but this seems apply to IE 5 only. (The
descriptions of the options in IE do not correspond with what I see here.)

Anyway, I found that "inline autocomplete" in the advanced options was
turned off. I turned it back on, restarted, but again no joy.

And there you have it: I'm still on square one. I'm being told "do not pass
GO" :-)

Do you have any other ideas, based on my findings?

Thanks,

Erik

Hi Kelly.

I've done some more searching...

After some reading in the newsgroups and other sites I found that
RSABase.dll is no longer being used by the latest versions of IE. No need to
look for it then.

> Method 4 describes how to create a new user account...

This is fixed now; it helps to start over with a clear head. I now get the
choose user prompt, as I should. And Autocomplete works fine on the new
account.

But I still have a problem. After creating the new user Method 4 describes
how to copy the old user account info into the new one. I'm logged on with
the old (damaged?) account. I see 3 profiles in the list: an administrator
account, my old account and the one for the new user. All three have
administrator rights. But when I select the old account the "Delete" and
"Copy To" buttons are greyed out, so I can't copy it anywhere...

Any ideas, please?

Erik

Erik, that's because you're logged in to it :-) To copy from the old
account to the new user account, you mustn't be currently using either
of them; log in using the third (administrator) account.

Thanks Nightowl, that confirms what I was thinking. And it also confirms that
the instructions are wrong. However, while I understand why I can't delete an
active profile, it's not 100 percent clear why I can't just copy it...

Anyway, I've logged in to the main Admin account, and tried copying the data
from the old to the new account. I'm running into a series of errors doing
that; so it looks like it's time for a fresh install. Sigh.

Thanks,

Erik

After all this messing with new users... it turns out that a simple System
Restore did the trick. Thank you XP!
