Autocomplete restore from backup???

I need to know asap if it is somehow possible to recover from a hard disk
failure requiring a complete new WinXPP SP2 & IE6 SP2 from my external drive
backup?!?

I have been looking on this site for the past several hours but nothing
applicable...
