Autocomplete has a mind of its own

My auto complete seems to work when it wants to, i.e for some names it
suggests as it should providing options from the first letter entered and
does so at all times.

At other times it only picks up user names that have been used previously in
that session/day. The next time I go back I have to re-enter the full email
address and then it works fine for the rest of that session.

I have confirmed the Advanced Email Options fields are correctly set to
"Suggest names while completing etc."

In addition to not suggesting names I have also deleted a couple of no
longer required addresses, as per the instructions in help, and yet they keep
re-appearing next time I open up Outlook.

I know it sounds wierd but as a mate of mine (who happens to write programs)
once told me if he ever wanted stress test something he'd give to me for a
week and if it still worked it was fool proof, can anyone help?

it sounds like the autcomplete cache is either corrupt or outlook isn't
closing properly. Which version of Outlook do you use? If 2007, did you
install the Feb Cumulative update? (Do so.) if 2003, when you close
outlook look in task manager, processes tab to see if outlook.exe is left
running.

Diane

Thanks for the thoughts. I use 2007 and have installed all updates as and
when they where issued and am certain I haven't missed anything. Having said
that the only "Cumulative" updates showing in my update histroy are for IE7
and Media Centre albeit there are plenty more there without being noteds as
Cumulative.

The point you raised about Outlook not closing properly has promted my
memory to the fact it does often come up with a message "A data file did not
close properly and is being checked for problems" - "Performance may be
affected while checking for problems". After this nothing else comes up to
say if it is fixed or if there is still a problem.

Assuming this could be the problem is there a way to check
outlook/autocomplete settings and, if so, can you recomend how to fix it.

I don't believe the February update gets installed automatically. You have to
visit the Knowledgebase to get it. When SP2 becomes available, the changes
will be part of that and then it will be installed automatically. There's a
hotfix and a cumulative update.
