I'm running WinXP Home SP2. Had a major failure recently, ended up having
to do an automatic "repair". Following the repair process, automatic
updates appeared to work once or twice. However, with every shutdown, 78
updates attempt to install but fail. Been doing this for about a dozen
shutdowns now.

The updates icon does not appear in the tray, but the updates icon does
appear overlaid on the shutdown icon. It reports 1 of 78.... installing,
then instantly quits and shutsdown. The same thing reappears next
shutdown.

Is there a way to force these updates when system is running normally?

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation

Get Dial-a-Fix:
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix:
- Windows Installer
- Windows Update
- All the Registration Center options.

Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Do NOT do "Flush SoftwareDistribution".

Then click "GO" and wait until it is done... Reboot will be needed.

- Download/Install Windows Update v3.

(You *may* need to install it using the command line switch "/wuforce"
right after the reboot - immediately after logging in.)

- Download/Install the 927891 patch.

- Reboot.

- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install updates.

- Come back and let us know how things went!

Thank you for this link, appreciated. It failed to emerge during my
search of Microsoft, perhaps wrong magic words. This link did work, all
79 updates now incorporated like they are supposed to be. One wonders
why Microsoft has not itself come up with an update to fix this shortcoming.
