All settings are for automatic updates, checking daily at
12:00 p.m. Today I did a manual check at 12:11 and
received : Spyware Definition Version: 5735 (7/19/2005
12:11:26 PM)

Why did it not arrive during the autoupdate check?

If you are not already running Build 1.0.615 of Microsoft AntiSpyware, then
download and install it as follows:

6. In control panel "Internet Options", emtpy your Temporary Internet Files
by clicking on the button "Delete Files..."
7. In the dialog that comes up, check "Delete all offline content", and
click OK.
8. Pause: when the file deletion has finished, click OK in Internet Options.
9. Launch your web browser, go to http://www.microsoft.com/spyware/ then
follow the links for the download.
10. When downloading the AntiSpyware Installer, select Save rather than Run.
11. When the download finishes, in Windows Explorer navigate to the
downloaded file, right-click it, and select "Properties".
12. Click tab "Digital Signatures" and read the date and time of the Digital
Signature.
13. For the Build 615 Installer, the digital signature date should be 13
July 2005 at 18:44:35 GMT, though the time will be displayed as adjusted for
your timezone.
14. If any other Digital Signature date is shown, then you do not have the
Build 615 installer: maybe your download was thwarted by an intervening web
cache: if so, repeat from step 5 tomorrow, each day until it comes right.
15. If you have the Build 615 installer, then execute it now. You should
restart Windows after the installer has finished.

Done.

I followed these instructions verbatim and I'm positive
that I'm running Build 1.0.615. I still have the problem
with having to (manually) update my definitions to version
5735. If anyone has any other suggestions I'd appreciate it.

Do you have to update to 5735 more than once?

Please look at the end of the file
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\errors.log
and see whether there are errors logged at the time you attempted the manual
updates. If so, copy the errors into a follow-up in this thread.
