The default TOC (what you get if you don't change any of the settings in the
TOC dialog) shows three levels, based on the outline levels applied to the
styles in the document. Headings 1-3 have outline levels 1-3, and there are
a few other styles (Title, Subtitle, and perhaps others) with default
outline levels higher than Body Text. The default TOC also has hyperlinked
entries and page numbers with period leaders. Any and all of these
properties can be changed; see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm. See also
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html for TOC basics.
