Auto-standby quits working

I seem to have trouble making auto-standby (based on the power management
timers) work. Or at least keep working.

I reinstalled Win2000 after a disk crash about 9 months ago, and suddenly
standby/hibernate started working. They didn't before, and I don't know
why, but after the new install they did. But I could never make the system
standby after XX minutes using the power management settings. I could
invoke standby manually, but not by a timer.

Last week I had a fatal registry corruption, and no recent registry backups
(oops). I had to revert to the registry copy created at the original
install 9 months ago. I had to reinstall most apps but at least I kept the
rest of my setup intact.

And suddenly the system was entering standby on its own, after the
specified 30 minute timeout. I'm not sure why, but I was happy.

But now, a week after the registry crash, it has once again quit entering
standby after the timeout.

Why do I have so much trouble making the timeout-standby "stick" !?

Check Event Viewer for errors.

Hm. System errors, I assume? Can you give me some idea what I'm looking
for?

Most of the errors I see in there are network-related, due to some
experiments I've been doing with virtual machines in VMware.

Several days ago, about the time auto-standby quit working, there were a
few errors related to the browser master on our LAN. First there was
this one:

> The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser
> master \\EMACHINE on the network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{1D511279-E521-
> 4E23-B27B-E13879EA969A}. The data is the error code.

Then a few minutes later:

> The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many
> times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{1D511279-E521-4E23-B27B-
> E13879EA969A}. The backup browser is stopping.

That backup browser wouldn't be related to this, would it?

A few hours later it got this error:

> The GEARAspiWDM service failed to start due to the following error:
> The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because
> it has no enabled devices associated with it.

But again, I don't think that would affect power management.

The only recent errors I see in Applications are a bunch of LoadPerf
errors:

> The performance counter name string value in the registry is
> incorrectly formatted. The last valid index value is DWORD 0 in the
> Record Data.

So I don't *think* there are any applicable errors in the Event Viewer...

When you view the logged events in Event Viewer (double-click them in the
right-hand pane) in the upper right corner, third button down is a copy to
clipboard, then you can paste in the body of a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different System Log events (that are a Type:
'Error' or 'Warning') since last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

Hm. I rebooted a few days ago, though I don't remember exactly when. I

You might try a vmware group. If the pc is multi-homed you'll sometimes get
those browser errors. This article may also help.

I am not at all concerned about the browser errors. I've gotten them for
years (apparently the 5 PCs on our LAN periodically fight for who's going
to be the master browser) and as far as I know it's never caused a problem.
Unless you say it's a likely cause of the standby failure, or if there's a
simple solution, I'll continue to ignore it.

I'd push for clearing up all system log errors.

OK, then how? The MSKB articles are not very straightforward. How should
I fix the master browser conflict?

BTW last night and this morning, the auto-standby started working again.
And I haven't changed a thing that I know of. Weird.
