Auto shutoff of monitor

I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2 on an AMD 2800+. I have my monitor
set (within the screensaver settings) to shut off after 20 minutes.
About 1 month ago. My monitor stopped doing this. After 10 minutes the
screensaver comes on and after 20 minutes the monitor turns back on
again. I haven't changed any settings in the BIOS or added any strange
software. I have no viruses or adware lurking. Any help would be
appreciated.

Please check the system date and time , then check if the time remains
correct over a 6 hour period. If it doesnt, then you need to replace your
battery. Even though your system is relatively new. I had a similar
experience with my P3, i started having somewhat the same type of problem
you present here, and a faulty battery was causing the problem.

Also if you "right" click your desktop to get to display properties, you
should on the screen saver "tab", click "power" tab and reassign the
settings for your power off setting for the monitor. please make sure to
press apply, then ok.

Try these 2 things and let us know if your problem still persists.

I tried both suggestions. The computer's battery tests OK and changing
the time to shutoff setting does not help. Any other suggestions?

Hi,

when you say the computer battery, are you referring to the main battery?
The battery the other poster I believe is referring to is the CMOS battery,
that is a coin size batter, probably a CR 2032 or CR 2025 a 3 volt lithium
battery, about the size of a quarter.

When I have experienced this in the past, changing the screen saver and
letting the monitor shut off with the timer seemed to make it work again.
Once you do that change it back and it should be fine.

========================
I have the same problem with my monitor waking up after about 10 minutes.
The time is accurate and following this suggestion didn't help. Anything
else that can be tried?

PS I don't know where the battery is located inside the case.

FS~

There is only one (1) battery in a computer.

I shall try changing the screen saver and seeing if this makes a difference.

Maybe in _your_ desktop computer. However, notebook computers also have
one or two "power" batteries which are used whilst not using mains
electricity. Some notebook computers also have a backup battery for the
CMOS battery and special circuits on the mainboard.

OK. I just tried this. I tried changing to different screen savers and
waiting to see what happened. What happened was that the screen saver
would come on as usual for it preprogrammed amount of time then the
monitor would click of then click back on again. This is beginning to
drive me batty. Such a simple thing.
