Following a scheduled update, auto-restart is now stuck in a loop.
After restart, wants to restart over and over again. Not only that,
it constantly nags me to auto-restart in 15 minutes, even if I select
"restart later". Can this aggravation be disabled?

Seems familiar .. occasionally the Windows Update components need to be
reset.
Try the 'fixit' on this page:

Sorry, did not help. What makes this auto-restart particularly
aggravating is that the warning message pops up every 5 minutes, warning
me that auto-restart will occur in 15 minutes. At that moment,
whatever processing is underway is immediately blocked (paused). If I
click on "restart later", that warning still pops up every 5 minutes.

The full warning is:

Updating your comp[uter is almost complete. Your computer needs to be
restarted for the updates to take effect. Windows will restart your
computer automatically in 15 minutes.

Do you want Windows to restart your computer now?

Restart now Restart later

I have done 4 complete cold shutdowns to let updates take place. All
shutdowns have a single update occuring each time. It appears to be
the same update each time that reports success, but fails to tell
somebody of that success. The same update reappears each time I shutdown.

Gets worse. If by chance, I leave my computer for a few minutes, for
whatever reason, that auto-restart message will popup in my absence and
in fact will force a restart, losing whatever work in process has not
been saved.

This came about following a need to do a fresh rebuild of my C: software
drive. On a new untouched drive, I did a clean install of my WinXP
Pro (SP2)

The last effective auto update did so for 72 updates.

SP3 has not yet updated itself.

Your thoughts?

Which update is it?
Might it be a .NET framework?

Are you able to start in Safe Mode? Or Safe Mode with Command Prompt? Has
the OS been reinstalled long enough to have any restore points? If so, then
you can restore to a point before the updates. From Safe Mode with Command
Prompt, type in c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and press Enter. Then
follow the prompts to restore.

referring to, regardless if I attempt update install directly, restart,
or shutdown.

I did an install of SP3, hoping that might get rid of this aggravation.
But, nothing changed. It still pops up, forcing me to be very
attentive, and do not leave my computer for more than 5 minutes.

That's all for today. I may have to do a "Repair" reinstall of WinXP
Pro and start the updates rebuild all over again. Not nice....:-(

Try to update by following the links .. then you will have an update
history .. it will list your failed upate .. or at least list the upadates
it thinks you installed.

Problem appears to be resolved. When I first installed R-Secure,
immediately following a clean install of my WinXP Pro, I failed to do an
immediate full system scan. In that short time while my computer was
on-line, a malicious parasite got into my computer and cause me a lot of
aggravation. I had naively perceived that nothing would get in in that
short period of time. Following a full system scan overnight with
auto-removal, this morning, my system appears to be operating normally.
Something I should have thought of much earlier. Many thanks for the
ideas and suggestions, appreciated.
