I have set up an auto-response rule as we do not use an Exchange server. I
have managed to get it to the point where it generates the reply but it
doesn't pick up the sender's email so the reply gets hung up in the Outbox.
I'm using Outlook 2003.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Post the exact definition of the rule (masking any real mail addresses it
may contain).
