With Excel 2003, having built a chart, i enable Data values on inside Ends
of the bars and save. I re-open the excel sheet/chart, Auto update window
shows, I select to enable the autoupdate. Immediately, the Data values
dissappear off the chart.

Anybody else seen this and know a work-around?

Is this a pivot chart? If so, loss of formatting is a known problem.
There's some info in the following MSKB article, which suggests using a
macro to reformat the table as required:

If that's not it, what is the source for the chart data?
