Using Word 2003
I want to add a footer to my document that adds page numbers automatically
as follows:
1.1
1.2
1.3
etc.

Can this be done?
Thank you, Karen

If the 1.1 is page 1 of section 1 and say 2.1 would be page 1 of section 2,
and your Heading 1 style has numbering assigned. Then in the Footer add the
Page number from the Header and Footer toolbar (the # icon), then with the
page number selected, use the Page Number Format icon (# with hand) check the
Include Chapter number box, change the Separator to Period, then Have the
page numbering Start At: 1.
Hope this helps

Also see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/ChapterNumber.htm.
Forgot to say you will need section breaks between your sections, as
Paragragh setting of page break before will not make this work.

Thank you for your help.
What I did was put the chapters in separate files. I used your method and my
pages all stay at 1.1. Actually, when I close the Header/Footer, the footer
disappears. So I don't have to combine all the files together in one file, is
there a way to add the page numbers in the first file as 1.1, 1.2, etc. and
then the 2nd file 2.1, 2.2, etc.
Thank you, Karen

Do I have to combine my files and separate the chapters as sections in order
to number the page numbers 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.?
Thank you again for all your help, Karen

Word can handle very large files (1,000s of pages) so using separate files
purely for sections can cause problems, ie page numbering.
Best practise is to have a document in one file - unless company/logistical
situations dictate.
As your document is separated in sections (do you mean chapters?) then your
numbering in each file will be ok, just have to force the chapter number to
start at the required number. Obviously if the chapter's number changes (due
to deletion/addition/move of another chapter, etc.) this will not
aoutomatically be refreshed, unlike if in one file.
Did you read the article concerning chapter numbering and the detrimental
factors that this can involve.
Hope this clears the mud a bit.
