Using Outlook 2003. The auto-completion/name checking only works until I shut
down Outlook. Each time I restart Outlook the auto names/addresses are gone
and I have to start all over again. It's like it's not storing a cache past
when I shut down.

Autocompletion and automatic name checking are two completely different
features. I suspect only the first is failing, not the latter. That's a sign
of a corrupt profile that can no longer write to the Autocompletion cache.
All you can do is create a new profile.

It's the feature that is used in the TO: part of an email. Outlook will
store the contacts that I email and recall them if I start that name or
address again, but only until I close Outlook, then they are all gone. Your
help is appreciated. - Jo

Had I not already tried to reset the profile without success I would not have
replied to your original comment. I'm not sure what the feature is called
that I described to you. That's why I gave you what I thought might be a
better description so that you could further help. I CAN see your answer,
but I have already tried that. Since I began using this version of Outlook
(2003) I have never been able to use the feature beyond a shut down of
Outlook. I just thought maybe there is something else causing the problem.
