does anyone know why my auto/manual update returns a message that it cannot
find an internet connection and cannot connect to the internet even when the
computer is connected? What to do?

The work offline item is not checked. My firewall is set to allow full access
to the spyware updater. I have used the manual updater before but for some
reason it returns a message that it can't find a connection.

If this isn't a transient issue, the most likely problem is the firewall.
Can you disable it temporarily to test? Are you behind a router or other
device which has some protective effect?

I have tried disabling my firewall and I have both high speed wireless and
dial-up and have tried using both to no avail. This has happened before but I
was able to get it back functioning. I'm stumped this time. I'm considering
uninstalling and downloading and reinstalling. Any comments on that strategy?

I think it's a long shot, but it shouldn't hurt--I'd add a step to your
strategy:

1) uninstall Microsoft Antispyware
2) delete \program files\Microsoft Antispyware and all subfolders
You will lose access to quarantined items, history and custom settings.
3) download and reinstall, taking care to be logged in as administrator.

I'll re-read this thread to see what I'm missing here--it shouldn't be this
complicated. The message can arise from any interruption--servers down,
routers between you and Microsoft. It could be caused by an entry in the
hosts file, I suspect, but haven't tested.--but these are pretty
esoteric--the most likely cause is a software or hardware firewall at your
end of the connection. Have you made any changes since this worked?

There has been the addition of high speed wireless but as I said I still have
the original dial up and have reverted to that as a test and I still can't
update. It has happened before I got the wireless and I found a way to budge
it off its sticking point but can't seem to find a way to do it this time. Is
it possible that I'm getting the message as a default but it is in fact
updating?

I've "seen" this clear up on its own. Go to Help, about, and see what
definition version is listed.

Current is 5801. Then press the diagnostics button. Look down the list for
a line ending in a number pair separated by a slash. These numbers should
be equal. If they aren't, the update hasn't completed correctly.

It'd be interesting to know the number, from Help, about, and that pair of
numbers from diagnostics.

It is the 5801 definition and the numbers are equal. Since it is the latest
def it may be the message is wrong. If there is no update available I get a
message it can't connect instead of there is no update available?

That message shouldn't appear, unless the client can't reach the server.
For example, if you are up to date, and do repeated file, check for updates,
you should just see the normal ui, not an error message.

So--I'm not sure what is going on in terms of that message--but something is
getting you updated--so I'd ignore it. There are a finite number of updates
left for the beta1 product, assuming that you choose to move to beta2 when
its available.
