Auto LogOn Setup - Clarifications

XP SP3 single Desktop... (1) ADMIN User / One BkUp Admin acct ONLY for Uh-Oh
Access to System if Main Acct corrupts / No User accts.

So, I'm going to make a 1st time "Main" Admin Acct Password & use KB315231
to Create Auto-Logon SO I can bypass having to Manually Select the Desired
Acct to Boot To - I don't see C:\Windows\System32\users.hlp Help file OR
have Original XP disks (HP installed XP) so I can't use the Short Create
Auto-Logon method.

KB says if you want to have ability to Bypass the Auto-Logon User Acct at
anytime To Logon as Another Acct ["the administrator must set the following
registry key: ... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" ... with Value: ForceAutoLogon/ Type: REG_SZ /
Data: 1 ] -----------------

Question 1: "set the following registry key" means Create a new entry,
right, AND under Winlogon NEW the selection chosen is (ie) String value,
right?

Question 2: IF I Didn't Do This and ever had the Main Admin Acct corrupt
itself wouldn't I be Unable to Logon to the computer? Seems this ought to be
REQUIRED. Have I got this concept right?

Thanks for any clarifications!

Have you tried the Start>Run Control Userpasswords2 method?
That's as simple as choosing a name and password that will log on
automatically.

Thanks, Rich.
According to the KB if I don't see C:\Windows\System32\users.hlp HELP FILE I
Have to Install IT to Use Your Suggestion (the Short Method I mentioned &
should have stated more clearly) - and since I don't have XP Install Disks
because HP installed XP and gave no disks, I can't install the Help file
required. The D:\ Recovery partition that has Day 1 hard drive stuff in it is
a mystery to me, so I haven't considered "Finding" this one file in it/.
Thanks again!

Rich, All Is Well!
You know the saying about what happens when you Assume? I read that while
the KB talked of Home XP and the absolute requirement of that certain Help
File, I ASSUMED the absence of it in my Media Ctr (Pro) folder meant I
couldn't do the CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 method either.

It's hell being a white-knuckled computer modifier, although sometimes I'm
braver than was the case here. MANY THANKS again!

Frustrating this doesn't allow EDIT.
What about the issue of maybe having a Corrupted "Auto-Logon To" User Acct
in future and needing to bypass that Account as stated in the original post.
Isn't that an Absolute Requirement to setup the additional entry via Registry
Mod?

Craig, if you get a Corrupted "Auto-Logon To" User Acct in the future
just Tap F8 at Startup and when you get a menu choose Safe Mode. From there
you can make changes, do
a System Restore or go back to User Logon.

Thanks, Rich. I suspect the KB Reg Edit to allow Holding the SHIFT KEY to
bypass the normal User Acct is needed more by multi-user stations for varied
& other reasons. This option is good for me. Auto Logon working fine. All
the best!

If there's a problem with the user account that has been chosen for "AutoLogon".

Holding the [Shift] key down as window boots should bring you to the "Welcome" screen
(if configured) or, bring up the "Login User" box (if configured).

*Note - If the "Welcome" screen is configured - the "Administrator" account should
also be visible on pressing [Shift] as XP boots.

Cheers, Tim Meddick, Peckham, London. :-)

Thanks, Tim. I just Logged Off - On twice by your directions BUT did not
understand I could do that via the KB 315231 instructions: [ "If you want to
bypass the automatic logon to log on as a different user, hold down the SHIFT
key after you log off or after Windows XP restarts. Note that This Procedure
Applies ONLY to the FIRST LOGON. To enforce this setting for FUTURE LOGOFFS,
the administrator must SET THE FOLLOWING REGISTRY KEY:" ] (see my 1st post
for How-To)

All is well after a got in the ditch (First) for Assuming and (Second) for
believing what I "thought" I read.

Thanks again to you and Rich.......................
