Auto logon network authentication loops

's Computer Specifications

a win 2000 pro workstation is set for auto logon. When it
reaches the name and password for authentication it loops
and flashes the net login window. Identical hardware
doesn't loop. The system does not go into Safe Mode and
locks on the black safe mode screen...

What's the recent history of the machine? Hardware/
software changes?
