Does anyone know why the auto hide property of the task bar would not be
working - auto hide is checked but task bar stays up always

How long are you waiting? They don't auto hide until not used for a period
of time.

By "they", are you refering to icons?
When I select "auto-hide the taskbar", it hides as soon as I apply that
setting. It will un-hide if I mouse over the area where the taskbar resides.
Hiding inactive icons takes some time and is not the same as hiding the
taskbar.

Try NOT auto-hiding it. Is it pulled up a notch or two from the monitor
baseline? Also, try moving it to the top of your monitor or to one of the
sides, toggling the auto-hide feature; then, once you're satisfied it's
working with the taskbar positioned elsewhere, move it back to the bottom of
your display.

(To move the taskbar: unlock it, press down BOTH mouse buttons and drag it
left-right-up or down. Typically, it won't move until you swipe it a second
time. But it'll cooperate once it's sure it's not responding to an accidental
swipe.)

Also: Using the Windows Key + D from within any application should take your
cursor to a "naked" desktop. If your taskbar is in "Auto-Hide" mode, one of
the behaviors of that keystroke combination is to force it down.

Hope this helps.

I moved the taskbar around and same results.

Unchecking the autohide changed nothing in the task bar appearance.

I unchecked the auto hide property and applied, then re-checked it, and it
hid immediately. As soon as I brought it up again though, it stayed up, and
continued to do so.

When Auto-Hide stops working, is the checkmark in the [ ] Auto hide the
taskbar option of the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog still there,
or has it disappeared? Also, are you XP-home or XP-pro?

One more question: Do you have any apps like TweakUI, TweakXP or Customize
Windows running which may or may not be cancelling out settings made "the old
fashioned way?"

I have this same problem with Vista home premium. I had the same problem with
windows XP and windows 98. It works well for a while and then the task bar
won't hide. I have to uncheck the box in properties, hit apply and then
recheck the box and hit okay. What a pain..... but at least microsoft is
consistent with thier bugs.
