I have a spreadsheet (xls) that whenever I enter a value into a cell
the text is in red and the background is turning a bright yellow
regardless of what the font & background settings are. What is
causing this?

Help please... Bob

Possibly Conditional Formatting is the cause.
Select the cell, then from the Format menu,
choose Conditional Formatting and see what is displayed in the box that pops up.

And if it's not conditional formatting, look for a macro that's running when you
make a change to a cell.

Try this:
Close excel
Reopen excel in safe mode
Windows start button|Run
type:
Excel /safe

The use File|Open to open your workbook and test.

In my case (Excel 2010), the fix was:
File -> Options -> Advanced -> Uncheck "Extend data range format and
formulas"
