sometimes when i write a sentence and then go back into the sentence to add a
word, the words get deleted. for example, if i write:

the dog jumped

then i decide that i want to add the word black in front of dog, i put my
cursor in before the d and when i type, the words dog jumped get eaten up
rather than pushed forward.

how do i stop that?

Press the Insert key again to switch back to Insert from Overwrite.
