Auto Complete Won't Clear

When I try to clear the auto complete it runs but won't
stop running. And the auto complete is still not cleared.
I have to end task to get it to stop running. My auto
complete list on some sites is a mile long and it's
driving me nuts. Any help would be much appreciated.
