When i enter a fraction as 10/5 it automatically calculates it to 2. Is there
a way to automatically calculate something like 2.89/5 and have it calculate
it as .578? Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you enter 10/5 in most settings of Excel that would be interpreted as a date, like May 10.
If you enter =10/5 it would be interpreted as a formula and show the result, 2.
If you enter =2.89/5 you'll probably see .578
