I am not too sure about what exactly author-time components are. For now - I
must user a server without any frontpage extensions - definitly will not be
using sharepoint services in my future either.

I understand that browse-time components are for fp extensions, what about
author-time? Thank you.

Author-time only applies when you are designing the site in FP.

Author time components are things like themes, Include files, shared
borders, Front Page Navigation components using the default theme (but not
using custom link bars or non-default themes)
These components are coded into the page when you save them, and do not
require any further action from the extensions.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;281532

lists the components that *require* server extensions, this applies to
FP2003 as well.
