Authentication in Smart Device apps

I guess Smart Device applications do not usually have a login and
authentication pattern as in larger systems. How does the server
authenticate / authorize the synch with a handheld in such a scenario ?

That really depends on the system topology. Maybe NTLM, maybe SSL, maybe
simple encryption of the data streams - it all depends on your app. CE has
no notion of users and groups, so it can't simply become part of a domain
based on the user.
