Authentication for HTTP from browser URL

I was just reading the knowledge base article at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;
[LN];834489
which deals with no longer supporting the
http(s)://username

assword@server/resource.ext

I was wondering if anyone knew or had heard if this
affects the ftp protocol in the same way.
