Hi guys,
Got an XP home edition computer which gives an error message on boot up
saying "Windows needs to authenticate the operating system, do this now? YES
or NO" at the logon point.
No matter which option is chosen it then returns to the logon screen with
the same message as before.
It does this regardless of the boot option chosen. I.E. Normal, Safe mode Etc.
Also the computer has been running with no problem for one year till this
point.

While you could connect the drive into another XP PC as a slave and scan it
for viruses or malware, that is probably not it. I've seen that screen a
couple of times before. One time, it was after making "significant
hardware" changes - which actually amounted to being nothing more than
having updated my drivers for existing my hardware.

You should click "yes" if you have no internet access -select phone option.
Call the toll free number, and present them with the 54 digit code thats
displayed, they will give you a new code to type into blank boxes provided
on the screen, and you should be good to go.

Hi CJ,
thanks for that but I don't get as far as the option to register. It just
goes back to the logon screen again !!
I was wondering if it could be another type of error from the auto update
svchost file which I know was causing some strange errors earlier this year.
By the way I said XP home and it is XP media if that makes any difference
