From your description it appears that you have several partitions
on your disk and you are now running off the wrong partition.
The Windows "System Restore" facility would have no effect on
this issue: It restores the current Windows installation to a previous
point but it won't affect other Windows installations (nor should it!).
A good starting point would be to post your current partition layout:
- What partitions do you have?
- Which ones are primary, which ones are logical?
- Which one is active?
- Where is the preferred version of Windows installed.
This is usually done with a partition manager, e.g. Acronis DiskDirector.
Alternatively you could temporarily connect the disk as a slave disk
to some other WinXP/2000 PC and run diskmgmt.msc.
You should also report the contents of the hidden file c:\boot.ini.
