It would be a tremendous help if audio could be started on a given slide and
have other slides related to it on a timeline - as in Photodexes ProShow
Gold.

I recommend MS get a copy of ProShow Gold and really look at how it works.
There is much, much to learn from them in terms of incredible transitions and
implementation of other features.

Dave,

I see you are a real fan of proshow gold. I've never used it..... is it
'resolution independent' ?

e.g. can you design something at a certain resolution (ie. 800x600) and then
show it at a different resolution (ie. 1024x768) ?

Cheers

I am a fan of ProShow Gold - but haven't used it a lot so I don't know the
answer to your question for sure, but I think the answer is yes - if you set
it to show at full screen resolution.

I mostly use video editors now for anything but teaching presentations - but
ProShow is a great tool that falls between the two.

It has a downloadable demo. There is not another product on the market of
which I am aware that does slide transitions that come anywhere close to
ProShow - you truly have to see it to believe it. I suggested this to MS
years ago - but if they would do these transitions - along with audio on a
timeline - they would blow away any competing presentation product - and
would capture whatever part of the market they don't already own (and to be
honest I have historically not been an MS fan - still using WordPerfect
because it is still the superior wordprocessing product).
