audio settings menu using skype

I have downloaded the latest version of skype, but on carrying out the test
call, get the message "skype cannot hear you talking. Is your microphone
muted?" Have gone through all the troubleshooting tips to no avail.
My audio settings menu only has one option "Realtek AC97 Audio", and not
"SoundMAX Digital Audio" which seems to be required for skype. This is
strange, as with the previous version of skype everything worked perfectly.
Does anyone have a solution?

I had trouble with skype when i updated but have fixed the problem today, my
microphone was perfectly ok until i rang on skype and it went dead. In my
AC97 audio configuration i changed a setting and microphone is ok now on
skype. In S/PDIF-out "output digital and analog" was ticked I changed it to
"output digital only" and that solved my problem.

Jad, hopefully this will help.
Go to "Start" then "Settings" Click on "Control Panel" and then click on
"sound effect manager" click on "S/PDIF-out" and make sure the dot is in
"output digital only" click "ok" and see if this helps. If it doesn't I will
tell you what is ticked in the other parts of "sound effect manager" Let me
know how you go. Good Luck.

Have you clicked on your "sound and audio devices" to see what is there.
What I altered in "sound effect" was the "AC97 Audio Configuration" the
"S/PDIF-out" part of it. Perhaps your system is different but I do remember
you saying you had AC97. To see if you can find this item go to "start"
"search" "for files or folders" click on "all files and folders" type in
"sound effect" and get it to search "My computer" and if you have sound
effect manager it should bring it up and just click on that. Failing this
Try going to "start" "Programs" "Realteck sound manager" and click on "AV
rack" on the left side of what comes up on your screen should have "recorder"
click on "select input source" and in that "microphone" is the only one
ticked in mine. Hope you can sort it out. Hopefully you can understand what I
have typed. Good luck.
