audio probs with msn messenger and yahoo messenger

something wrong with my pc settings? can send webcam pics and instant messages (simultaneously) to other pc users on my contact list - but as soon as i initiate audio to chat direct i cannot connect to the other party. am using h/phone and mike and my audio tests are correct on both msn and yahoo - cannot hear my contacts or get thru to them on audio - could someone suggest what i have /am doing wrong pleeeese !
