audio problems

HP Pavillion 8766C. Recently took ME out and had xp pro
installed. Device manager shows no problems. However, my
sound is not right. When using cd player or dvd player,
with music match or windows media player, the sound goes
from normal to dragging and to skipping. Can anyone
please advise?
