Audio problems

I had to reformat recently, and I've done this before, and encountered the same problem as now, but fixed it. Problem is, I forgot how to fix it. Here it is: I don't get sound... I've done the search your hardware thing, nothing new there... I use Altec Lansing AV8300 speakers... Do I need to install sound drivers or something, and will I have a disc for that???
