Audio player with remote control (over LAN) feature

Hello!

I'm in the process of making a "media center"-like device.

For now, it is on the network and already playing audio (it is connected to
an amplifier).

But it is headless - no monitor. (in the future it will connect to TV)

I'd like to remote control it from my desktop PC.
Is there any freeware audio player with remote control over LAN?

Using VNC to control it is not quite an option (the machine has only 128MB
RAM and runs Windows 98).
