audio output failure from USB wireless transmitter

My wireless audio transmitter, (Onkyo UWL-1 wireless USB audio transport),
has suddenly packed up.
The transmitter plugs into a USB port and transmits to a remote receiver
which is plugged into a stereo system. I have 2 of these kits and I’ve
swapped them around, so I’m sure they’re not the problem; the receivers are
detecting the carrier frequency.
(I have tried all the USB ports on the PC. All volume slider controls are
at max. I’m on XP Home, on a Dell Dimension 4600 with SP3 and WMP11. The PC
sound system is ok.)
You’re meant to switch on the receiver, plug the transmitter in and then
start up WMP. The presence of the transmitter should divert the audio output
away from the external speakers.

The problem I have is that the sound still comes only from the external
speakers, (these are connected to the jack plug at the back of the PC and are
otherwise working OK).
When I plug in or remove the transmitter the PC doesn’t always ‘beep’ in
recognition of the device and it doesn’t appear in the list when I click on
‘Safely remove hardware’.
However, when plugged in, the device does show up in Device Manager/Sound,
video and game controllers as a USB Audio Device, and in ‘Universal Serial
Bus controllers’ as a USB Composite Device. In both cases its properties
description is ‘C-Media USB Headphone Set’ (at location 0) and the device
status is ‘working properly’.
There are no yellow “?” against any of the devices in the above controller
categories.
The C-Media USB Headphone Set also becomes listed as available for sound
playback in Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices, (along with the Creative SB
Live sound card)
The drivers seem to install from the device itself, there is nothing on the
accompanying CD-rom and the internet hasn’t turned anything up about Onkyo
drivers.
I've tried the wizard for updating drivers but it says it can't find
anything more suitable than the current selection.

Your first sentence says a lot .....

However, you may have a conflict if you still have your on-board sound
activated. Its possible to use that and a USB device, but you'll need to
make sure that the USB device is selected as the defaut system. The best
thing is to ddisable the on-baord sound card in the BIOS.

Cheers,
Jerry

Any ideas?
Anyone?
