I've got a mess after trying to install pci
audio programs. Part way thru computer was
rebooted. Now I can't play any audio files on hard
drive. I can hear a cd and if I use an editing
software (Goldwave) I can also hear them. If I try
to use WMP nothing. My default program (Irfanview)
also nothing. When viewing and listening to flash
program on internet the audio portion is now gone.
Uninstalling the pci applications doesn't
help. Device manager shows no problems. I ran the
audio portion of Dxdiag and all was well. I can't
remove any of the devices as I can't find a
"remove" button.
To compound matters my System Restore is
inoperable. I get a message that "points cannot be
restored because drive was not monitored or
removed"?! What the heck? Can I fix this problem
using the Recovery part of the XP install cd? And
if so what are the steps.
I thank you all for any help in this mess I
have created.

Try device mgr, expand the sound tree,R.click on sound hardware 1 @ a time,
select "uninstall" do this for all its sound hardware (do not restart pc
after each),
close out when thru,if any sound software was installed, uninstall in
add/remove,
shutdown pc after, power off (unplug)..Move the pci sound card to another pci
slot, restart pc when thru,xp will reinstall card from scratch...
