Dell laptop running Vista Premium. Analog audio input is seen in recording
levels, and records to wav files, but I can't hear it from the audio output
before I record it. Any ideas? It worked fine on my old laptop under Windows
Me.

In Recording Devices (Control Panel > Sound) have you set the default to
something like Stereo Mix (Realtek) or "What U Hear" (Creative) and in Playback
Devices set your Speakers (analog) or SPDIF (digital) as the Default?

I'm having the same problem and I've spend hours with Dell tech support to
understand and resolve the issue...bottom line is they say that for Vista,
Microsoft has basically 'disabled' the ability to listen the what you are
recording WHILE you are recording it. However, this seems inconsistent with
various Vista help text what seems to indicate such a simple task (that
worked find in XP) is possible.
My problem is I don't HAVE any selection like 'Stereo Mix' or 'What U Hear'
on the Recording tab, I only have Micorphone, Rear Mic and Line In (which is
selected).
At first, Dell said if I got a Sound Card that supported 'Stereo Mix', I
could hear while recording, then they said no sound card manufacturers have
developed the drivers. But then I see Vista help text under the definition
of 'Duplex Sound Card' that seems to indicate that if I only had a duplex
card, I could hear what I'm recording while recording.
I would appreciate any clarification or guidance. If I have by buy a new
sound card, fine, but I'd like to have some level of comfort that it will
work.
Thanks in advance

What is your audio adapter in Device Manager > Sound, video and game
controllers?

If it is Sigma Tel, I believe that they have not implemented this (yet?) in
their drivers.

No it is NOT a Vista issue. This feature is functional in Realtek's and
Creative's (X-Fi) drivers.

You will have to wait for Sigma Tel to provide this ability.

SigmaTel audio was bought by IDT in 2006. They do not make the drivers, the
manufacturers of the computers or motherboards make the drivers. For a list
of updated drivers from the manufacturers look at this blog post:

To 'Cal Bear 66'... yes, my audio adapter is 'SigmaTel High Definition Audio
CODEC'.

To 'k12IT'...I followed your link and eventually navigated my way to the
Dell driver download site. So I see a driver 'Sigmatel STAC92XX C-Major HD
Audio Driver' that is compatible with my compter model, Dimension E520. It's
version is 6.10.0.5511 whereas my currently installed driver is 6.10.0.5343.
I'm not sure if I should install this driver. I'd be more comfortable if it
was named the same as my current adapter, but the incrementing of the version
number seems to indicate it's a newer version of the same driver, I'm just
not that familiar with all this.
Should I install the driver? If I do, I'm sort of assuming it will now
cause a new selection like 'What U Hear' or 'Stereo Mix' to appear as an
option on my 'Sound / Recording' tab.
I guess I could call Dell On Call, but I'm sure they'll charge me...
Any further advice (and thanks again).

Hi,

Yes download it. But don't do an upgrade install. Instead,

1. Uninstall the current driver
2. Reboot.
3. Install the newer driver.
4. Reboot.

You then should have a completely new driver and one that works with the mic.
