Audio hardware acceleration settings won't stick

Whenever I lower my audio hardware acceleration to "basic", it returns to
"full" after a while. I have tried setting acceleration via the control
panel AND dxdiag, both with the same results. I have on-board audio with the
latest drivers (Realtek AC'97 Audio, vers. 5.10.0.6020, 02/08/2006). Any
ideas as to why my settings won't stay set? Thank you in advance for your
help.
