I have intermittent sound on my laptop - the fader icon at the bottom of the
screen has disappeared and when i go into control panel it tells me that
there are no audio devices. I have looked in add/remove programs and there is
an audio driver package present but it appears to have no file size!! The
audio driver package concerned is KB835221. Is this the root of my sound
problem - if so how do i remedy it? The laptop came with XP on it so i dont
think i have any discs to recover the driver package from - what do i do?

That kb# would appear to be an MS update pkge
Either roll back the driver, or visit your laptop manu site, and download
install their sound drivers
Do NOT use winupdate for drivers.

You get the drivers for your sound from the laptop mftr.'s website. Make
sure you download the ones for your specific model laptop. If updating
the drivers doesn't help, then you have hardware failure. Contact the
laptop mftr. for repair/replacement because you can't fix this yourself
on a laptop.

start > control panel > system and click the hardware tab then
select device manager.

when device manager opens look for any yellow ! or ? marks. If one
shows means that your driver files have been corrupted. and the
audio files will need to be removed and a newer version will have to
be installed.

you can find updated driver files by going to the laptop's
manufacturer website and look under downloads or driver files in the
support section...

there will also be detailed instructions on how to uninstall the
drivers and reinstall the updated ones .
