Audio driver questions

Windows XP Media Center 2002 (SP2) on HP Pavilion A1600n computer (7 months
old)

No sound card; audio adapter of unknown manufacture is built into the
mainboard. The two biggest chips I see on the mainboard are made by ASUS and
nVIDIA.

However, there is an audio driver applet in Control Panel named Realtek HD
Sound Effect Manager (RHDSEM). This applet can no longer be opened since
applying Windows Security Update KB925902. And then after applying the patch
to that faulty update (KB935448), it did not correct the problem caused by
KB925902, but instead it further damaged the system by causing sounds to
become scratchy and only faintly audible.

If I have no Realtek, soundcard, then why do I have a Realtek audio driver?
Is it because RealPlayer had been downloaded sometime in the past? Should I
continue trying various Microsoft patches or should I uninstall the RHDSEM?
Afterwards, will I have to reinstall Windows components in order to restore
audio capability?

The RealTek is the sound chip on the motherboard. Get drivers for it
from HP's tech support site for that specific model Pavilion. Uninstall
and reinstall the drivers, using the most recent ones from HP's site.
