Audio doesn't work properly

There seems to be a problem playing audio on my computer.

Whenever an mp3 is played, the output is sort of
distprted, it plays fine for a few second, then this weird
noise, then a few seconds of normal, etc.. The sound
sounds almost like it would if the pc was lagging (it's
not though), if you know the sound I mean.. But weirdly,
CD playback and system sounds (.wav) are fine. Media
Player Radio stations were also distorted in the same way.

The drivers are fully updated, there are no hardware
conflicts, speakers are definitely plugged into the right
hole, all the obvious stuff is fine...

I have tried playing through Winamp v2 and 5, and Windows
Media Player 9, and it's just the same. Though notably,
the problem seemed to begin after a Windows Update that
installed WMP9 on my system, although I have now
uninstalled it.

The sound driver is a Creative CM18738/C3DX (in a PCI
slot). But I've also tried with the sound card supplied
with the computer, Crystal WDM MPU-401.

I am running Windows 2000 on a 200Mhz pc, with 160mb RAM
(Don't laugh!). Although I'm sure it's not hardware
realted, because as I said, it all USED to work fine.

Has anyone got any advice? This has been bugging me for 4
days now, I don't want to make it 6...

Richard Dunlop-Walters.

Are you?! Then could you please enlighten me as to why you're posting in a
Windows *XP* group?! And don't say it's because you couldn't find one for
2000 as there are as many for 2000 as there are for XP.
