Audio Compression Problem in XP

Good morning,

I just noticed that the sounds I personally set-up to
play in Windows have stopped working. When I try to
choose (from the sounds area in the control panel) them
Windows XP gives me message saying that they are invalid
files or are compressed and I need to install audio
compression. If I go to the directory they are in and
double click them they play perfectly with real Palyer
AND Media Player. But Windows does not recognize them as
a star-up sound, or shut down sound, or new mail
notification sound, etc. I have no Idea what to do now.
Please advise. Mail sent to personal e-mail account
preferred. Thnaks.
