I have lost the dvd and audio cd file types, so the icons no longer show for
these when inserted. The auto play is lost and a window just opens showing
all the contents of the cd or dvd.. I have noticed the file type for these
is missing and I cannot add it back because they are missing from the
advanced add tab. IO have tried to reinstall media player 11 with all
defaults but this has made no difference, they are still missing. They will
still play but I have to fire up media player first then select play the cd
drive. How can I get the registered file type back ?

I would reinstall the "WinDVD" or PowerDVD" software that probably came on
disk with your system.

No I mean when you put a audio cd or video DVD in the drive it is no longer
recognised as such but as a data cd instead. If I goto tools/folder
options/file types/ audio cd or DVD types is not listed anymore, I need to
add them back but I cannot as they are not on the advanced list, I have
checked on another pc and they are present

I have tried uninstalling the cd rom drive and reinstalling
uninstalling and reinstalling nero
uninstalling and reinstalling wmp11

xp pro sp2

Not sure I understand you completely - but if you have lost the extention for
certain files, I suggest you go to Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View, there you
will find a 'Hide files extention for know types of files'. If that is checked
uncheck it and you will again see the file extentions - your other problem will
probably be sorted at the same time.
