I got an external 5.1 surround sound audio card and sometimes when i am playing music. the sound will gett all staticy and does this until i stop the music and open another program. once i do that the music plays like it should when i press "play." So i am woundering if i can turn off the sound card thats in the computer and play through the USB based sound card? Or is there something else that i should do?

If you have onboard sound then try turning it off in the Bios.
