I recently had to do a complete new reinstall of XP. Now the system will not
accept the driver for my audio card (Philips PSC 703). Here's what I've tried
to do:
-Made sure on-board audio is disabled in BIOS.
-Downloaded Driver from Microsoft site - didn't work. Microsoft site shows
the update downloaded to my computer (three times as a matter of fact) and
that the download and install was successful, but it doesn't work.
-Downloaded update from Philips site - didn't work. I can get my system to
find the folder the update is in, and it begins to install the update, but
about halfway through the update stops and the computer says it cannot
continue the update because the data is invalid.
-Tried to reinstall original driver from CD - computer told me it was too
old and I had to get the updated driver from Microsoft.
Tried to reinstall the Driver.cab file from the XP disc (I had to do this to
make my printer work) - didn't work.
-Removed the Audio Controller so the computer would see the audio card as a
new piece of hardware - didn't work.
I've done all these with and without computer reboots and am now completely
baffled. System is a home-built unit with a A7V7X-X Asus motherboard running
a 2.25 Ghz Athlon Processor and 1 Gig of memory. Any help is greatly
appreciated.

"Tried to reinstall original driver from CD - computer told me it was too
old and I had to get the updated driver from Microsoft."

Provided the philips cd drivers is for winxp, install it, then visit Philips
site and download the update.

Never download driver updates from MS, unless its MS hardware.
Driver updates, from certain manu's require that there earlier driver is
installed, before the update will run.

Rich, to answer your question, yes, after I got my internet connection up and
running the first thing I did was install all the updates for XP from
Microsoft. My install version of XP is Service Pack 2.

DL, I don't know how to make the computer use the driver from the disc. I
was still running ME when I bought the card, but I had no problems with the
original install of XP. However you might be on to something. Even though
I've downloaded the latest update provided by Philips, maybe it won't update
if it doesn't see the original driver first. Is there any way to make XP take
the original driver from the disc?
