audio and video conflict

When I install a sound card the screen display on my PC
slows dramatically. I am running Windows XP Home on a home
built PC with Gigabyte 7VAXP Ultra Mainboard, MSI
G4Ti4200TD graphics and SonicFury sound card (tho the
issue is the same if I enable onboard AC97 sound instead).

I've updated all the drivers without any effect. I suspect
a problem with the IRQs but cannot see any way of altering
them in the BIOS.

Any thoughts appreciated.
