Personally I add the Inbox folder of the additional mailbox to my Favorite
Folders which is enough indication for me to see if there is a new email.
This might work for you too. Depending on your version of Exchange, opening
the mailbox in OWA might work for you too to get a notification on new
email. You can then of course reply by using Outlook. Further workarounds
could be connection to the mailbox by using IMAP.
