atus in status bar of Outlook (2002 SP3)

I searched all over for this and couldn't find any hits on "atus."

I have suddenly started seeing "atus" (without quotes) to the left of the
send/receive % in the Outlook status bar. Whenever it appears, Outlook stops
running correctly and eventually shuts down automatically. It usually
happens several times in a row, and I often end up rebooting to correct it.

What is the cause of this problem, and can I correct it easily?
