Hi Shep

I tried your Powermax program but it still won't work.

I right click and open with Nero, it then gives me 2 options, (1) to make a
floppy, or (2) to make the CD with Locale support(?). I obviously can only
choose (2) as I have no floppy!

I then set my PC to boot from CD Drive, and it seems to be working fairly
well but then, after a series of dos (Caldera DOS) instructions and lots of
other lines of info like "Found USB Hosts" etc. it gets to an A: prompt with
a chunky blinking cursor, and won't accept any commands. It is to be noted
that I have a USB cordless keyboard that appears to be lifeless though, at
this point.

I really want to scan the drive before I decide for myself if the drive is
faulty or not, I've done the Seagate scan, which is Windows based, and all
appears ok. I would prefer to try the Maxtor scan though!

Thanks for any advice.

Nik.

It's not mine,it's Maxtor's.

There's definitely something wrong with you whole O/S and system.

I have yet again extracted and double clicked on the .iso I made with
a freshly formatted CDR/W disk.Chose,"Write" in Nero,Re-booted and job
done :/

lol. I appreciate what you're saying but it's such a new, clean system with
regular virus checks and good maintenance, I doubt there is a problem with
the O/S. I have had no problems at all, ever, with XP - it's a full, clean
SP2 install from the manufacturer and it has all latest updates/drivers etc.
installed.

I think it might be to do with keyboard support - I have a cordless USB
Logitech MX700 desktop, my Keyboard/Mouse hub doesn't light up when I boot
from the CD, so I'm guessing it hasn't been initialised within the boot
sequence. I might try and dig up and old PS/2 K/B?

I think you're right to a certain extent, there is "something" different
about my system otherwise the boot disc would work (I even keep the BIOS
flashed to the latest version), but I think it's more of a case of me not
having a floppy drive, and there being no keyboard recognised for some
reason.

Ah well, I can live with it - I would call it a major problem, just
annoying! ;-)

Thanks anyway for your efforts.

Nik.

This would not be a windows problem because you're not
running windows at that point. Check bios settings.

Yes, but didn't the MX700 come with a PS2-USB adapter so you
don't need the other keyboard?

Unless your drive is nearly at the end of the warranty
period, you might consider formatting it, extensively using
it for the next few days to see if the problem resurfaces.

I'll try reformatting it, the warranty has run out, I checked on the Maxtor
site.

Thanks.

Nik.

Good point. There must be a fundamental fault in the hardware/Mother
board :/
I use the ISO I made on loads of systems even proprietary ones without
any problems :/
